Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, recently identified as containing the most important concentration of threatened wildlife on Earth, faces increasing pressures from coal mining, palm oil, commercial fruit and illicit coca plantations.

In December 2013 Drummond Coal were fined $3.6 million for illegally dumping coal in the Caribbean

Cerrejón Coal, subsidary of petroleum giant BHP Biliton have halted plans to relocate one of the Sierra’s principle rivers, el Rio Rancheria to access coal seam beneath.
